I have had setbacks that felt like the end of something. A marriage that could not be repaired. A relapse after years of sobriety. Work I had built that went sideways. Every time, the first thing I felt was that something had broken in me.
That was never what happened. What broke was the ground I was standing on. There is a difference, and it took me most of my life to see it.
Borrowed ground is any place you are standing that belongs to someone else. A title that tells you who you are. A relationship that makes you feel like a good man without requiring you to be one. A version of yourself built to be acceptable to a room you did not choose. It holds weight for a while. That is the trap. You can build a whole life on it and never know it is not yours until something pulls it out from under you.
A setback does one thing well. It shows you the seams.
The day the ground goes is the day you find out what you were actually resting on. Not what you told people. Not what you believed on a good morning. What was load bearing. Most men find out it was other people's approval, and that is a hard morning.
Here is the part nobody wants. When the ground goes, the instinct is to go find new ground fast. Another job, another relationship, another identity, another room where you can be somebody again. I have done that. It works for a while, right up until it does not, and then you are standing in the same rubble with more years on you.
The instruction is the opposite of the instinct. Plant there anyway. Right in the place that just failed. Right in the ground you were embarrassed to be standing on.
Roots do not grow in comfort. Anyone who has put a seedling in soft potting soil and then moved it outside knows this. The plant that never had to push against anything falls over in the first real wind. Resistance is what makes a root go deep and hold. That is not a metaphor I invented to make you feel better. It is how growing works, in soil and in men.
So the ground gave way. Good. Now you know where it was thin. Stand in that exact spot and put something real down. Not a plan. A practice. Something you do on the days you do not want to, when nobody is watching and there is no credit for it. Sobriety was that for me. So was showing up for other people when I had nothing to give. So was the daily work I still do now, further down the road than I used to be, because the day I stop is the day the drift starts again.
The setback did not break you. It told you the truth about where you were standing, and the truth is a gift even when it arrives sideways.
Plant there anyway. That is the only place real roots ever take.
